How to improve the heat resistance of heat resistant steel casting?

As a seasoned supplier of heat resistant steel casting, I’ve witnessed firsthand the critical role that these components play in various high – temperature industrial applications. Heat resistant steel castings are utilized in sectors like power generation, metallurgy, and glass manufacturing, where they are exposed to extreme heat. Enhancing the heat resistance of these castings is not only a technical challenge but also a key factor in meeting the evolving demands of our customers. In this blog post, I’ll share some effective strategies based on my practical experience in the industry. Heat Resistant Steel Casting

1. Alloying Optimization

Alloying elements are the building blocks that determine the heat resistance of steel castings. By carefully selecting and adjusting these elements, we can significantly enhance the performance of the castings under high – temperature conditions.

Chromium

Chromium is one of the most important alloying elements for heat resistance. It forms a dense and stable chromium oxide layer on the surface of the steel when exposed to high temperatures. This oxide layer acts as a protective barrier, preventing further oxidation and corrosion. For example, in our heat resistant steel castings, we typically add a sufficient amount of chromium (usually between 12% – 30%) to ensure good oxide scale adhesion and oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium content, within a certain range, the better the oxidation resistance at high temperatures. However, increasing chromium content too much can also lead to brittleness of the steel, so it needs to be balanced with other elements.

Nickel

Nickel is another crucial element. It enhances the stability of the austenitic structure in steel at high temperatures, improving the strength and toughness of the casting. Nickel also helps to reduce the coefficient of thermal expansion, which is beneficial for preventing cracking and deformation during thermal cycling. In applications where the castings are subjected to repeated heating and cooling, a nickel content of 8% – 25% is commonly used. For instance, in some of our power generation – related castings, the addition of nickel enables the components to withstand harsh thermal conditions without significant degradation in performance.

Molybdenum and Tungsten

Molybdenum and tungsten can increase the high – temperature strength of heat resistant steel castings. They form carbides that are stable at high temperatures, which pin the grain boundaries and prevent grain growth. This, in turn, maintains the strength and hardness of the casting. Molybdenum is often added in the range of 1% – 5%, while tungsten content can vary from 2% – 10%, depending on the specific requirements of the application. In certain metallurgical equipment, these elements help the castings to resist deformation under high – temperature and high – stress conditions.

2. Microstructure Control

The microstructure of heat resistant steel castings has a profound impact on their heat resistance. By controlling the microstructure during the casting and heat treatment processes, we can optimize the performance of the castings.

Grain Size Control

A fine – grained microstructure is generally beneficial for heat resistance. During the casting process, we can use techniques such as inoculation to promote the formation of a large number of nuclei, which results in a finer grain size. Inoculants like titanium, zirconium, or rare – earth elements can be added to the molten steel. These elements act as heterogeneous nuclei, encouraging the growth of small grains. Heat treatment can also be used to refine the grain size. For example, a proper solution treatment followed by rapid cooling can break up the large grains and form a more uniform and fine – grained structure. This not only improves the high – temperature strength but also enhances the creep resistance of the casting.

Precipitation Hardening

Certain alloying elements in heat resistant steel can form precipitates during heat treatment. These precipitates, such as intermetallic compounds or carbides, can strengthen the matrix by hindering the movement of dislocations. For example, in some heat resistant steels containing aluminum and titanium, a fine dispersion of Ni₃(Al,Ti) precipitates can be formed through a specific aging treatment. This precipitation hardening process can significantly increase the strength of the casting at high temperatures. However, the precipitation process needs to be carefully controlled in terms of temperature, time, and cooling rate to ensure the desired size, distribution, and morphology of the precipitates.

3. Casting Process Improvement

The quality of the casting process itself also affects the heat resistance of heat resistant steel castings. A well – executed casting process can minimize defects and improve the overall integrity of the casting.

Melting and Refining

During the melting process, it is essential to ensure that the steel is fully homogeneous in terms of composition. We use advanced melting equipment, such as electric arc furnaces or induction furnaces, to achieve precise temperature and composition control. Refining processes, such as argon – oxygen decarburization (AOD) or vacuum – oxygen decarburization (VOD), are then employed to remove impurities like sulfur, phosphorus, and gases. These impurities can degrade the high – temperature properties of the steel, so their removal is crucial. For example, sulfur can form low – melting – point sulfides, which can cause hot cracking during casting and reduce the oxidation resistance of the casting.

Pouring and Solidification

The pouring temperature and rate have a significant impact on the quality of the casting. A proper pouring temperature ensures good fluidity of the molten steel, preventing incomplete filling and cold shut defects. The pouring rate should be controlled to avoid turbulence, which can entrain gases and cause porosity in the casting. During solidification, the cooling rate needs to be carefully managed. A controlled cooling rate can help to avoid the formation of thermal stresses and large – scale shrinkage cavities. In some cases, we use specialized molds or cooling systems to achieve a more uniform cooling rate across the casting, which is beneficial for the formation of a sound microstructure.

4. Surface Treatment

Surface treatment can further enhance the heat resistance of heat resistant steel castings.

Coating

Applying a high – temperature – resistant coating on the surface of the casting can provide an additional layer of protection. Ceramic coatings, for example, can have excellent thermal insulation properties and can resist oxidation and corrosion at extremely high temperatures. The coating can be applied through processes such as plasma spraying or chemical vapor deposition (CVD). These coatings act as a barrier between the casting and the high – temperature environment, reducing the rate of oxidation and heat transfer.

Nitriding

Nitriding is a surface treatment process that introduces nitrogen into the surface layer of the steel. This forms nitrides, which can significantly improve the wear resistance, hardness, and heat resistance of the casting. The nitrided layer can also enhance the resistance to oxidation and scaling at high temperatures. There are different types of nitriding processes, such as gas nitriding and plasma nitriding. Plasma nitriding is often preferred for heat resistant steel castings due to its precise control over the nitriding depth and the properties of the nitrided layer.

Improving the heat resistance of heat resistant steel castings requires a comprehensive approach that encompasses alloying optimization, microstructure control, casting process improvement, and surface treatment. As a heat resistant steel casting supplier, we are committed to continuously researching and implementing these strategies to provide our customers with high – quality castings that can meet the most demanding high – temperature applications.
